Workshops
Last year we were proud to offer for the first time a series of optional and supplemental workshops facilitated by some of the guest lecturers from our weekly speaker series! These workshops were a great way for interested students to work one on one with the speakers they were most interested in. We hope to continue to offer workshops again this year, and for years to come! Last year's workshop descriptions are listed below.
Spring 2011 Workshops
Tuesday, April 5th- Mark Lakeman: Planet Repair, Step 1: Intersections 11am-1pm in the Quarry Plaza
A dialogue about what we perceive does work about the communities that each of us lives in, and what we would like to shift or change. Then we'll apply these ideas to design exercises on intersection templates that I'll bring, using basic art supplies that I will also bring.
Monday, April 11th-Leith Sharp: Group Intelligence Workshop: 3pm-4:45pm at the Charles E. Merrill Lounge (Merrill College)
We will be exploring broader implications of what we are learning from campus sustainability on the larger green economy. Together, we will inquire deeper into the importance of group intelligence (as opposed to individual intelligence) in moving us all forward. What is group intelligence? How is it key in relationship to sustainability? What impedes it and what can we do to enhance it?
Tuesday, April 12th- Ari Lesser: Political Hip-Hop Rhythm workshop 10:30-12pm at the Sustainable Living Center in the Village, Room A-3
Ari will be sharing techniques and guiding students to produce words or ideas into rhymes.
Monday, April 18th- Tim Galarneau: Finding your Kuleana: Leadership & Development for Young People in the Food Movement 3:30-5:00pm at Baytree Muwekma Ohlone Conference Room (Located on the 3rd floor above the Baytree Bookstore)
Young people across the country, from rural and urban to indigenous communities are testing their voice, seeking new alliances, and fostering change. Come learn about the importance of sharing stories, building new skills, and preparing to manifest a pathway of informed leadership and thoughtful action in these challenging times. Focusing on, but not excluding broader issues, this workshop will explore food justice, community action, and how we ground ourselves in seeking empowerment by integrating our past and building a present moment ripe with potential.
Tuesday, April 19th- Dr. Richard Oppenlander: Making Critical Food Choices 12:30-2:30pm at the Charles E. Merrill Lounge

Tuesday, May 24th - Andy Couturier: Writing in Nature Workshop: 10:30-12:30pm in the Sustainable Living Center at the Village, Room A-3
Too often writing pulls us out of our present experience and disconnects us from the luminous natural world. It doesn't need to be so. In fact, we can actually use writing to heighten our perceptions and sensitivities to the many "beings" that call to us in nature. Our animal bodies have been tuned for thousands of generations for the most acute perception of the world, and we can use writing to renew that connection. Join us for a short tasting of techniques that can help you to use your innate human capacities for language to engage more vitally, to actually participate with the natural world vitally around us.
